Kerckhoffs' Law is an interesting read, if you've ever thought that open source cryptographic software is inherently insecure.

Oops, dinner is burning.  Wait.. I'm not making it.

> Turkey Day!
Posted by prox, from North Brunswick, on November 24, 2005 at 11:02 local (server) time

It's that time of year again.. dinner with family and friends that consists of turkey, stuffing, mashed potatos, corn on the cob, cranberry sauce, and pumpkin pie.  Oh yeah, Happy Thanksgiving.

-> (10:38) From StayPuft, to random:
 - Shouldn't the turkey in the Google logo look a little less happy? I
 - mean... Chances are he's going to be eaten.

I agree.. but then, I hear lots of families have ham instead of turkey, nowadays.

I'm spending my [small] vacation in NJ with parents and relatives.  It's a nice break from work, but it's so darn cold.  We ventured into Weehawken, NJ last night and, after waiting a loong time in gridlock, took a ferry to Manhattan and saw The Producers.  I can't remember the last time a broadway play made me laugh this much.  (It was quite good)

Tomorrow I might just head out and join some crazy shoppers.  Either that, or sit at home with the laptop and make some TCP connections to amazon.com.

Almost all of the airports I've previously been to either 1) have no internet access 2) require a payment for the use of crappy wi-fi.  So now, I find myself sitting in the Charlotte Intl. Airport on free non-suck wi-fi.. neat.  They have a nice [new] business center with free wi-fi and wired access.  I'm impressed, since just a couple months ago they had next to nothing.

Half the staff [dressed up as either pilgrims or turkeys] is also giving out free candy to everyone, it seems.  I passed on that, since there's a Krispy Kreme store in the terminal.. mmm.

This is really neat.  I think I signed most of my life away for the API, though.  Maybe I should read those thingers before saying I agree.

... nobody is trying to send me mail.  My mail server [nonce] is down due to Sago Networks creating a dozen routing loops in their core.  Fallout from a failed Foundry NetIron software upgrade, supposedly.  This thread has all the details (or lack there of).

And, Epiphany really needs to stop stealing focus from this textbox as other tabs refresh.  Grr.

> Out of shape ...
Posted by prox, from Charlotte, on November 13, 2005 at 10:29 local (server) time

I didn't fully realize how out of shape I was until yesterday, when I played a full four hours of paintball.  It was great fun since there were at least 12 of us at all times, and I think I had a couple good plays.  Reminded me of the brief times when I played Raven Shield.  Now, it would be nice when these sore spots go away.  Time to join a gym w/a pool, I guess, too ...

I figured out why my Gentoo Linux boxen continued to revert to DST (-400) time regardless of what my /etc/localtime was symlinked to.  Check out the defaults in /etc/conf.d/clock:

# If you want to set the Hardware Clock to the current System Time
# during shutdown, then say "yes" here.

CLOCK_SYSTOHC="no"

Changing that variable to "yes" seems to fix the problem.
