Yes, hell has frozen over, there's a preview (ie, beta?) of a 64-bit build of the infamous Adobe Flash Player for GNU/Linux.

I picked up a Cisco Aironet 1200 series wireless access point (AIR-AP1232AG-A-K9) on eBay, last week.  I named it orthogonality, for obvious reasons.  My NETGEAR WAG302 just didn't cut it anymore (it wasn't too stable).  The performance with this thing is like night and day:

My IBM T42 via 802.11a:

Actually, I think half of the problem with the T42 is crappy Atheros chipset/drivers.  Here's my Eee PC via 802.11g:

The configuration is pretty straight-forward (erm, you have to be at least vaguely familiar with Cisco IOS).  The only thing that threw me for a loop was the guest-mode option for each SSID.  This option, in fact, enables the SSID name to be attached to each beacon frame sent from the access point.  It's off by default, which seems odd for IOS, since traditionally a non-broadcast SSID is thought by some to provide some sort of security through obscurity, and IOS has always seemed like an "insecure by default" operating system.  Maybe it's just me.  Here's what I'm talking about:

!
dot11 ssid AHiddenSSID
   authentication open
   authentication key-management wpa
   wpa-psk ascii 7 04680E502532434987B324324B43290C7221217C0720370108
!
dot11 ssid ABroadcastSSID
   authentication open
   authentication key-management wpa
   guest-mode
   wpa-psk ascii 7 3495834759835749875985785D2B0D2F3D2B200530761C0F02
!

Now, I need to do some exploring into the 802.11 MIB, and make some better graphs

If you've been living under a rock, or don't read the news, you might not know that Barack Obama was chosen to be the next president of the United States.

Barack Obama

We'll see what this change brings.  It's too bad I missed the hologram on CNN.

> Trick or treat? Trick.
Posted by prox, from Charlotte, on November 02, 2008 at 19:25 local (server) time

I had a fun Friday.

First off, dax crashed again.  This time, ad12 was detached (some history here).  I logged a support ticket with Voxel asking if they could just swap out the box for a new one, keeping the existing drives.  I was thinking that the SATA controller was flaky, since two drives couldn't be bad, right?  They were nice enough to do the swap in <15 minutes flat, and I was up and running again with a brandy-new box (only difference turned out to be a E4500 processor compared to a E4300 in the old one).

(of course, today the box crashed again w/ad12 as the culprit.  These guys at Voxel are really nice, they're going to swap out the disk tomorrow.  After that - all hardware is new)

Anyway, to continue my fun Friday.

As I was driving home, I decided to stop at Best Buy to pick up a Bluetooth adapter for my Eee.  As I was driving there, I witnessed what is probably the worst Charlotte driving I've ever seen.  I've [poorly] illustrated it overlayed on blown-up Google Maps satellite photography (link).

Normal

Centrum Pky. is a four lane road, two lanes in either direction with a sometimes-absent turn lane in the middle.  My vehicle (green) was in the left lane, since the turn to Best Buy was going to be on the left, driving at around 25-30Mph keeping at a distance of around 1-2 car lengths behind a silver Honda Element (red).  Some brunette with sunglasses was driving (as I found out afterwards).  So far, so good?

Turning?

The Element moved into the right lane (no turn signal, of course!) and started slowing down.  I figured she was going to turn right into the Wachovia branch, so I didn't think to slow down or hit the breaks, yet.  No problem, so far.

What?

As you look at the image, you say, "nah, she didn't do that."  Yes, she did.  Without letting me pass or slowing down at all, the Element swung a full 100+ degrees right in front of me, cutting me off completely, and completed what looked to be the most dangerous U-turn I've ever seen.  I'm fairly sure my car left tire tracks when I stopped (anti-locks kicked in!) short.  I blew the horn, and received what I can only guess was a confused or surprised look on the woman's face as she just went on her merry way.  Seriously.  What the heck.  These people need to be taken off the road.  It's too bad I didn't get the license plate.

To top it all off, I didn't get any trick or treat-ers!  I never do, though.. disadvantage of living in a condominium.  I went swimming at the Y, instead (wow, was it empty), to blow off some steam.

Since North Carolina offers early voting this year, I decided to take advantage of it, and take a long lunch:

Early Voting

Early Voting II

11:38 to 13:27.  Yep, almost two hours.

The best part was when I got back to the office, and found that my AD account was locked out…

14:48 < beez> you chose.... poorly

Hmm…

I was at Target yesterday, and saw the Eee PC for $299.  Being a practiced impulse buyer, I picked it up.  In all honesty, I've been thinking of replacing my aging IBM T42 for awhile, but haven't pulled the trigger.

The preloaded (apparently Xandros) Linux install offered some funny-looking menus and Firefox, so I went on to install Debian GNU/Linux.

After some hair pulling and repetitive USB boot disk creation, I got almost everything working, except for the following:

See more information about six (hostname) on the wiki.
