From http://www.networkworld.com/news/2006/090706-pc-hard-disk-system-warns.html:
As part of their operation, hard disks measure vibrations in order to keep the read-write head of the disk on track. These measurements can be read from some hard disks. The Tsunami Harddisk Detector captures this vibration data and shares it with computers in other locations connected via a peer-to-peer network to determine whether an earth tremor is occurring.
Neat.
This is interesting. I upgraded a box to Debian's 2.6.16-2-686-smp [2.6.16-17] from 2.6.12-1-686-smp, and find out NIC bonding doesn't work. With Debian's ifenslave package (version 2), I get:
# ifup bond0
SIOCBONDENSLAVE: Operation not permitted.
The bond0 interface is setup, yet passes no traffic. However, if I build the 1.x version of ifenslave I got from here, it works fine.
Also to note, I have another box with the same kernel, ifenslave version, and NIC models, and it works fine. I'm passing mode=1 miimon=100 to the bonding module, since this is just for redundancy. lspci output is:
01:02.0 Ethernet controller: Broadcom Corporation NetXtreme BCM5703X Gigabit Ethernet (rev 02)
04:02.0 Ethernet controller: Broadcom Corporation NetXtreme BCM5703X Gigabit Ethernet (rev 02)
... all using the tg3 driver.
Weird, huh?
eth0: link down
... then eight minutes later
eth0: link up, 100Mbps, full-duplex, lpa 0x41E1
It's never good when you see that on a dedicated server =)
This is just silly. I'm sure someone out there will buy one or two, though.
After not caring for the longest time, I now have a reason to upgrade my BlackBerry to the 4.1 software release. I've always wanted a simple and quick IMAP client for the BB, and LogicMail seems to fulfill my needs. It requires some base64 functions only included in the 4.1 software, though.
Now I begin my hunt for a windows box ...
(Upgrading the BB via VMwared windows does not work - I spent a bit of time trying)
From http://osnews.com/comment.php?news_id=15586:
Sam Ramjii, Director of Microsoft's Open Source Software Lab, has extended an invitation to the Firefox and Thunderbird developers asking them if they'd like to visit the company's open source research center.
Are they going to make it out of there alive?
I started to go through all the belongings I still have at my parents' house. Turns out I have lots of old junk.
Good music, good acting.. I enjoyed it. Lip-sync by some of the actors.. not so much.
