So, I noticed festival wasn't working, the other day:

% echo hi | festival -tts
Linux: can't open /dev/dsp

Turns out the solution is rather simple:

# apt-get install alsa-oss oss-compat

I was missing oss-compat.  Go figure!  I wonder when festival will start using ALSA natively?
