This you should read! Ok, I've noticed over the past week or two that popularity of this site has gotten a bit high. According to stats that I gather on a daily basis, this site serves approxmiately 40-60gigs of data a day to people around the world, most of them not in the US (this is good!). Page hits roughly total about 7700/day.
This itself is all and good, but it's getting to a point where I'm reaching my limits. These limits include basically bandwidth and computing power. The server, as you all might know, is only a PIII-500, with 512mb of ram, running Linux 2.4. Sure 500Mhz can be considered fast...about 3 years ago! The 10mb connection I'm on also has its limits. Lately I've had some trouble streaming any media (or accessing a remote shell) from across campus, due to the pipe filling up. There are several other problems I've ran into lately.
There are three things I can (have to) do about this. (1) Have alternates for every new video I host; and you had better use them... (2) Enforce bandwidth limitations when I see fit; it's better than connection limitations, so be happy you're downloading a file slowly than not downloading it at all, and (3) Eventually implement mod_throttle and limit the amount of concurrent connections from each client (to one or two) in order to filter out all the download agents.
First of all, I hope this news posted correctly, it's kinda long. I hope this is all I have to do. If more idiots keep linking directly to the videos, I'm going to have to implement some fierce scripting in order to filter out these people. Alright, that is all for now, good day! :-)
