From a section of The Gentoo Handbook:

"Make sure you download a stage3 tarball - installations using a stage1 or stage2 tarball are not supported anymore."

Why?  I thought compiling the entire system from scratch was one of the distribution's main selling points...

I agree with you. I thought compiling from the ground up had advantages over starting with stage 3. I thought that gentoo's creators were proponents of compiling more, rather than less, from source.
(Besides, it's nice to know that if you're compiling everything from source, you aren't doing so on a relatively large - compared to stage 1 - foundation of precompiled software).
