As alumni and annual donors to RPI, we understand giving is a personal choice. We all make the choice to support students and faculty of our alma mater. We do this to provide the same opportunities we had, to students who are at RPI today and will be in the future. The RAA board recognizes the importance of giving back and started an endowed scholarship for Rensselaer students in 2016. Our gifts directly impact our students and they also impact our rankings, as alumni participation is a criteria used as a promoter score for institutions. Critical and opposing views of our alma mater have been widespread, especially this past month. We believe that the only way to resolve these issues is through clear and honest communication and we hope that everyone keeps this in mind moving forward. From that standpoint, the RAA Board of Trustees has met with Rensselaer administration and student leaders with regard to current concerns expressed by alumni and will continue to do so as part of our purpose to “establish and maintain a mutually beneficial relationship among these groups.” Our purpose is also to “facilitate the exchange of information, ideas, and opinions between Rensselaer and its alumni/ae; encourage inclusiveness while fostering mutual respect and understanding among a diverse alumni/ae body.” Going forward, we intend to increase our communication presence across all media platforms in line with the RAA mission, vision, and bylaws.
